Novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is famous for his Victorian romances, but determined to move on to more serious fare he decides to kill off his heroine Misery Chastain in his latest novel.
Setting off for New York with the completed manuscript, Paul is caught in a blizzard and is rescued from a car crash by nurse Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates).
Annie turns out to be Misery's number one fan, and after reading the new book she has some less-than constructive criticism. Held captive in Annie’s home, Paul soon finds himself writing for his life.
