Phoenix is changing to 5-day opening from Monday 7 April
Following our recent announcement about proposed changes to our opening hours, we can now confirm that from Monday 7 April we will be open 5 days a week.
Our new opening hours from Monday 7 April will be:
Mondays 12pm – 11pm
Tuesdays Closed
Wednesdays Closed
Thursdays 12pm – 11pm
Fridays 12pm – 11pm
Saturdays 11am – 11pm
Sundays 11am – 8.30pm
Box Office will be open Thursday – Monday (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays), but online booking is available 7 days a week via our website where you can also purchase and renew memberships, buy gift vouchers, and make donations.
We will, as ever, offer a full and vibrant programme of cinema, art and learning opportunities, and our Café Bar will operate as normal within our revised opening times.
As a much-valued customer, your support is vital. Please continue to support Phoenix by buying tickets, using our Café Bar, becoming a MyPhoenix member, buying Phoenix gift vouchers, hiring our spaces and holding your events at the venue, and by making donations.
Why are we making these changes?
Phoenix is an independent charity. Since 2020 we’ve faced one huge challenge after another – the COVID pandemic, rising operating costs for businesses, dwindling public funding, and the cost of living crisis – and their serious impact on our financial stability has been deepened by the loss of a significant grant and the additional liability on Employers’ National Insurance contributions as a result of the government’s Budget.
We opened our new extension in January 2023, having started the project back in 2016 when trading conditions were highly favourable. COVID delayed delivery of the expansion project significantly, and we then found ourselves encased in scaffolding due to the city council’s programme of work to replace the cladding on the original Phoenix Square building, which began in early 2023 and is scheduled to finish this summer.
Nevertheless, our award-winning expanded venue presents us with exciting opportunities for future growth that should enable us to become more financially resilient in the long term – but we face immediate financial challenges that we must address now.
We’ve worked hard to grow our audiences and develop new income streams, but it is essential that we reduce our operating costs so we can rebuild our funds, improve our financial stability and secure Phoenix’s future – moving to 5-day opening is an important step in that process.

We continue to focus on growing our business and are actively seeking new funding opportunities, including through sponsorships and collaborations. We are also open to full venue conferences or event hire on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when we will be closed to the general public.
