For November’s CQ Lates we’re joining forces with Dare To Diva to bring you a special performance event featuring London and Leicester-based poets. Together they present an evening of poetic performances responding to the themes of our current gallery exhibition, Virtual Textual.
The exhibition explores the digital aspects of game-based poetry and touches on nature writing, speculative futures and digital worlds.
Cultural Quarter Lates is a programme of free creative, fun activities for adults across Leicester’s Cultural Quarter on the last Friday of every month.
About the Performers
Carol Leeming
Carol Leeming MBE FRSA, born in Leicester, of Jamaican, African Caribbean descent. Carol is Director and Lead Artist of Dare to Diva company established over 20 years ago. Carol received the Queen’s Honours MBE 2019 for her poetry plays and contribution to Leicester arts and culture. Carol works as a freelance, multi-disciplinary arts practitioner: her roles include, published poet, writer /director, dramaturg, performer, singer/songwriter, musician, composer, consultant, curator and lecturer, in addition to being a public speaker on various topics.
Kamisha Hawkins
Kamisha is a local Leicester born and bred poet. She runs the annual African Caribbean Poetry Honouring poetry event at Spinney Hill Park’s Oscar Frank Memorial bench. The event honours her late father Oscar Frank, who was a local Barbudan dub poet in Leicester, and celebrates all ancestors for one and all. Kamisha writes poems on various subjects, but her main themes are self-reflection, self-empowerment, and upliftment of humanity. Kamisha headlined at Pinggg…K! Poetry Night, and is a support act for international poet John Agaard at Word! Poetry Night October 2023.
Valerie Walbrook
Valerie Walbrook was born and raised in Leicester. Valerie’s interest in poetry began in the early eighties listening to poets such as Linton Kwesi Johnson and Jean Binta Breeze with their words and lyrics that were deep and meaningful. Writing poetry was a pastime until most recently when she wrote Life Is A Struggle and entered her first local competition in 2021, coming third. She then followed on in 2022, winning with the poem I Am Black History coming first. Valerie also attended Open Mic sessions, which have inspired, and given Valerie confidence when performing. Writing poetry enables Valerie to express her thoughts and feelings, sharing experiences that also reflect the diversity and struggles of the world that we live in.
Nick Murray
Nick Murray is a producer, composer and artist making interactive sonic and narrative work focusing on loss and digital cultures. This often takes the form of games, interactive poetry and performance. Nick is Lead Producer for Now Play This at Somerset House and Director of Playing Poetry.
Antosh Wojcik
Antosh Wojcik is a poet, drummer and cross-disciplinary artist. He produces music as /weirdtoday and is a member of the collective FWRDMTN.
