An Indian Summer

After a phenomenally successful first year, Indian Summer returns to Phoenix! This year the festival is bigger and better than ever and has expanded to cover the entirety of Leicester's Cultural Quarter! An Indian Summer is an event which has been designed to give people of all ages an exciting trip into one of the world’s most fascinating countries and cultures.
From decorating the Phoenix to exhibitions and work-shops, you will be entering a new country for the weekend! See below for the full programme of events at Phoenix, for the film line-up CLICK HERE
EVENTS PROGRAMME
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY DAYTIME
In the Phoenix cafe bar and across the culturalquarter, there will a variety of dance and musical performancesthroughout the weekend.
SATURDAY 16TH
2pm - Raja Yoga
Explore the most ancient form of meditation, often described as ‘yoga for the mind’
4pm - Unfolding the story of Indian Cinema
Indian Cinema is amongst the most famous and recognisable in the world. Come and learn about its amazing history.
4.30pm - Asian Women and Leadership
50% of the world’s population is female and yet, in many places, they are still treated as second-class citizens. How do we make this stop?
6pm - Journey to Fitness
Get fit the Indian way!
6.30pm - Tabla with a difference
A live video link-up with tabla players from Leicester (Rishii Chowdhury and Anand T. Bhalsod), the USA (Robin Sukhadia – tablapusher.com) and India (Mayur Narvekar – Bandish Projekt). A truly international experience.
8pm - Music Fusion
Following last year’s outstanding performance, two professional percussionists (tabla and drums) will lead some of Leicester’s top musicians in a musical celebration, fusing Eastern and Western sounds in a very special concert that will leave your heart singing.
SUNDAY 17TH
2pm - Raja Yoga

4pm - The Golden Age of Indian Cinema
Take a nostalgic trip back to the Indian cinema of the 1930’s.
4.30pm - Journey to Fitness
Get fit the Indian way!
5.30pm - Comedy
Lighten up your festival day with some hilarious stand-up comedy, in more than one language!
7pm - Music, Comedy and Spoken Word
An exciting and relaxing way to end your festival experience, with a mixture of music, live poetry and spoken word from some of Leicester’s best artists.

DARBAR FESTIVAL
Gowati is an inspiring multi-screen installation that re-imagines classical Indian performance for contemporary audiences. The piece will be presented on six separate screens in the DMU Cube at Phoenix Square.
Ramakant and Umakant Gundecha, better known as the Gundecha Brothers, are renowned for performing Dhrupad, an ancient form of temple music and one of India’s most important classical traditions. Exhibition ends 23rd July 2012
WELCOME TO ENGLAND
A collection of short films showing the experience of those who migrated to England through choice or force. 2012 celebrates 40 years of Ugandan Asians migrating to Leicester and you will see the journey of various people that took
this move.
LANGUAGES OF INDIA
There are many languages spoken in India. How did they come about? Was there an original? What is the story behind them? The writing is, literally, on the wall at Phoenix Square.
